Barcelona achieved huge revenues from its participation in the Champions League this season, due to its second place in the league stage table in the continental competition. Barcelona ended its journey in the Champions League group stage with a draw in the last round against Atalanta with a score of 2-2, in the match that was held at the "Montjuic" stadium.
Despite the Catalan team's efforts to achieve a victory that would end this stage in an ideal manner and strengthen its position in the standings, it was satisfied with one point in a match that was not easy.
Barcelona concluded the group stage in second place with 19 points from eight rounds, as the Catalan team achieved victory in 6 matches, lost one match, and drew in one match. Second to English table leaders Liverpool.
According to the Spanish newspaper "Sport", Barcelona's profits have reached 44.9 million euros so far. Of this amount, the club received 18.6 million euros as a fixed bonus granted to all 36 teams participating in the group stage by the European Football Association "UEFA".
Barcelona also added 13.3 million euros to its coffers thanks to its excellent results in the tournament, and its qualification to the round of 16 granted it an additional bonus of 11 million euros, in addition to another 2 million euros for its direct qualification without the need to play the play-offs.
The newspaper indicated that another part of the revenues came from the bonus distribution system known as "Shares", which is based on the teams' ranking in the group stage.
According to this system, the last team gets one share, while each team above it in the ranking gets an increasing number of shares, up to the leader who gets 36 shares.
The basic value of each "Shares" was 275 thousand euros, but it increased to 298,146 euros due to the number of draws recorded in the tournament.
As Barcelona finished second, they received 35 shares, adding over €10 million to their total earnings.
With the end of the group stage, Barcelona's total earnings from the Champions League have reached over €55 million (€55,335,122), strengthening their financial position ahead of the knockout stages.
These earnings will help the Catalan club overcome their current financial crisis, which has forced them to sell a number of their young players.
Barcelona will also make additional profits after the distribution of sponsorship and TV rights money at the end of the season, giving them a strong boost in their quest to win the continental title and boosting their sporting and economic gains alike.
