Verdict: Salah continues his disappointing record in finals.

Verdict: Salah continues his disappointing record in finals.

17 March 2025

Egyptian Mohamed Salah failed to perform as expected during the EFL Cup final, continuing his string of disappointing records in finals since joining Liverpool in the summer of 2017. Liverpool lost the final to Newcastle United 2-1 at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, with Salah being completely ineffective, failing to shoot on target and creating a single chance throughout the match.

Newcastle's two goals were scored by Dan Burn in the 45th minute and Alexander Isak in the 52nd minute, while Liverpool's only goal came from substitute Federico Chiesa in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

According to Stastriker, Salah has scored only two goals and provided one assist in 11 finals (or title-deciding matches) with Liverpool. Remarkably, both of his goals came from penalty kicks, one of which came in the 2019 Champions League final against Tottenham, meaning he has not scored a single goal from open play in a final.

Despite his remarkable brilliance in the English Premier League and his numerous record-breaking performances in the competition, Salah has yet to make a clear impact in the crucial matches that lead to title wins.
