China’s national team, described as “more united” and confident, will be fueled by a desire for redemption when they face Saudi Arabia in a pivotal World Cup qualifier on Thursday, according to striker Zhang Yuning.
Branko Ivankovic’s side endured a difficult start in the decisive third round of Asian qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, suffering three consecutive defeats—including a 2-1 home loss to Saudi Arabia. In that match, the Saudis overcame a 19th-minute red card for Mohamed Kanno, coming from behind to snatch victory with a last-minute goal in Dalian.
However, China have since revived their World Cup hopes with back-to-back wins over Indonesia and Bahrain, setting the stage for a crucial encounter in Riyadh.
"Everyone is looking forward to an exciting match, especially after the disappointment of the home game," Zhang told reporters. "We will fight from the first minute because we now believe we can win."
The 28-year-old Beijing Guoan forward emphasized the squad's growing cohesion. "The team has become more united. After going through a period of struggle, including three straight losses, we are all on the same page. Right now, we are in a very unified state," he added.
With four matches remaining, China sit at the bottom of Group C but are level on six points with Bahrain, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia. Japan lead the group with 16 points, while Australia hold the second automatic qualification spot with seven points.
Following the showdown against Saudi Arabia, China will face another high-stakes test when they host Australia on Tuesday.
Ivankovic has bolstered his squad by calling up Brazil-born midfielder Serginho for the first time, while teenage talents Wang Yudong and Liu Chengyu have also been included in an effort to inject fresh attacking options into a team that has struggled for goals.
"I think these new players, especially the younger ones, will bring a lot of energy," Zhang noted. "They are fearless and will contribute significantly to the team."
China’s quest for a second-ever World Cup appearance remains a challenging one, but with renewed belief and a strengthened squad, they will be determined to take a decisive step forward in Riyadh.
