Southampton were eliminated from the English Premier League this season, becoming the first team to be relegated to the Championship following their 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, in the 31st round. Brennan Johnson scored Tottenham's first and second goals in the 13th and 42nd minutes, respectively, while Matheus Fernandes scored Southampton's consolation goal in the 90th minute.
Tottenham finally ended Southampton's hopes of a draw when Mathis Tel scored the third goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time from a penalty kick.
With this loss, Southampton, who suffered their 25th defeat in the league this season, compared to two wins and four draws, remained at 10 points in last place, 22 points adrift of safety, confirming their relegation to the Championship with only seven rounds remaining.
If Southampton win all seven of their remaining league matches this season, they will still not be able to climb out of the relegation zone, even if the results of the other competing teams go their way.
On the other hand, Tottenham, who have earned only one point in their last four matches, have increased their points tally to 37, temporarily moving up to 13th place until the rest of the round is completed.
