Real Madrid secured a hard-fought thrilling victory over visiting Athletic Bilbao, 1-0, in the 32nd round of the Spanish La Liga. The first half ended in a goalless draw, with both teams failing to find the net amid a flurry of scoring opportunities.
In the second half, Brazilian striker Vinicius Junior scored for Real Madrid in the 79th minute, but the referee disallowed the goal after consulting the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) due to offside.
In the third minute of stoppage time, Uruguayan Federico Valverde scored Real Madrid's winning goal with a stunning volley. Real Madrid's tally rose to 69 points, consolidating its second place in the standings, four points behind leaders Barcelona.
Meanwhile, Athletic Bilbao's tally froze at 57 points, remaining in fourth place, 6 points behind Atletico Madrid, which occupies third place.
