Chelsea have entered discussions over the potential signings of two of the Netherlands' most exciting young talents, as the club looks to further reinforce its youthful squad during the summer transfer window.
The Blues have opened talks with Ajax regarding 19-year-old centre-back Jorrel Hato, one of the breakout stars of the Eredivisie last season. Hato, who made 31 league appearances for Ajax in 2023–24, is widely regarded as one of Europe’s top emerging defensive prospects. Chelsea are in direct contact with both the Dutch club and the player’s representatives, though negotiations are still at an early stage and no agreement has yet been reached.
Simultaneously, Chelsea are also pushing forward in their pursuit of Xavi Simons, the RB Leipzig forward who impressed during Euro 2024. The 22-year-old Netherlands international is believed to be open to a move to Stamford Bridge, and talks over personal terms are ongoing. However, a deal with Leipzig has yet to be finalised.
Simons, who only made his permanent move to Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain in January after a series of loan spells, is attracting strong interest across Europe. Bayern Munich are monitoring the situation but are currently prioritising a move for Liverpool’s Luis Diaz. Meanwhile, Arsenal have also been made aware of Simons’ availability as they evaluate their attacking targets for the summer.
Despite mixed perceptions early in his career, Simons’ recent performances have silenced many critics. Prior to the Euros, former Ajax manager Aad de Mos suggested there was “too much hype” surrounding the forward. However, Netherlands legend Boudewijn Zenden offered a more optimistic view, stating:
“He’s got the right attitude, the engine, the skills — he works hard and never complains. Any manager would want him.”
That view was reinforced during Euro 2024, where Simons scored a stunning goal in the semi-final against England, underlining his big-game potential. Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk echoed that sentiment:
“He has so much to give and can become even better. He has the right mentality to keep improving.”
In the 2023–24 season, Simons recorded 11 goals and eight assists in 33 appearances across all competitions for Leipzig, despite the club finishing a disappointing seventh in the Bundesliga and missing out on Champions League qualification.
Chelsea’s interest in Hato and Simons is part of a broader recruitment strategy focused on youth, potential, and long-term development. Under the club’s ongoing rebuild, several high-upside signings have already arrived at Stamford Bridge this summer:
Should Chelsea secure deals for both Hato and Simons, it would further demonstrate their commitment to assembling a squad with elite-level potential underpinned by youth, versatility, and athleticism. Hato would add defensive depth and future leadership potential, while Simons would bring immediate creative impact and attacking threat — qualities the Blues have sought to refine in recent transfer windows.
While negotiations remain fluid, Chelsea’s approach signals clear intent: to build a competitive and dynamic team capable of challenging for major honours in the seasons ahead.
