Falkirk Impress on Premiership Return in 2-2 Draw with Dundee United

Falkirk marked their long-awaited return to the Scottish Premiership with an impressive 2-2 draw against Dundee United, showing they may be ready to compete at the top level after 15 years away.

John McGlynn’s side, who secured promotion by winning the Championship last season, started confidently in front of a lively home crowd and controlled much of the early play.

Despite their strong start, it was Dundee United who struck first just before the break.

Max Watters pounced on a poor clearance from Liam Henderson and volleyed home his debut goal for the visitors.

Falkirk responded well and were rewarded for their attacking intent.

A fluid passing move saw captain Brad Spencer find space in the box before laying the ball off to Dylan Tait, who rifled a first-time shot into the top corner.

United regained the lead when Ivan Dolcek weaved through a few loose challenges and slotted past Scott Bain.

But the home side refused to back down and grabbed a deserved equaliser when Ethan Ross’s effort deflected in off Vicko Sevelj.

"I’m extremely proud of how we matched a side that finished fourth last season," said McGlynn.

"A number of our players looked like they truly belonged at this level."

Main Talking Point: Can Falkirk Handle the Step Up?

Much of the attention was on how Falkirk would fare in the top flight with a squad that remains largely unchanged from last season’s Championship campaign.

McGlynn has opted to show faith in the players who earned promotion, with only Scott Bain and Brian Graham featuring as new starters.

Defensive lapses led to both goals conceded, and Falkirk’s attacking style occasionally left them exposed.

However, their quick, cohesive passing showed that their brand of football can still thrive against Premiership defences.

While sterner tests lie ahead and squad depth may become an issue, Falkirk’s opener suggests they’re not just here to make up the numbers—they intend to compete.

What did they say?

Falkirk manager John McGlynn: "You could see the appreciation of the fans at the end of the game.

"We will learn from certain aspects of the game."

Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin: "It's probably a fair outcome for both teams.

"There are so many key players for us out injured. We ask the group of players to go again on Thursday. Those are the challenges we want.

"We've made a lot of progress in a couple of years. It's going to take time for this group to come together, but I do believe we've built a really strong squad."
