Bournemouth striker racially abused by 'disabled' Liverpool supporter

17 August 2025

The opening match of the English Premier League between Liverpool and Bournemouth, which ended with the Reds winning 4-2, witnessed an unfortunate racist incident involving Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo.

Referee Anthony Taylor stopped play for several minutes during the first half after Bournemouth player Antoine Semenyo was subjected to racist abuse by a Liverpool supporter. The footage showed a disabled supporter in the wheelchair row attacking Semenyo as he was preparing to take a throw-in. The supporter spat at the player and used a racial slur. Shortly after the incident, the referee stopped the match before the accused supporter was removed from the pitch.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed his deep dismay at the incident, especially since it marred a night dedicated to honoring the late Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who died in a tragic car crash last July.

"I spoke with Semenyo after the match and assured him that the club will do everything it can to identify the person responsible," Slot said.

He added: "Semenyo has shown great moral character and is not only a fantastic player but also a truly strong human being, but this type of behavior is completely unacceptable."

Liverpool beat Bournemouth 4-2 in the Premier League opener on Friday, achieving their first win of the new season.
