Newcastle United have confirmed that Alexander Isak was not informed in advance that he could leave this summer, in response to a social media post by the Swedish striker.
Isak broke the silence amid attempts to leave Newcastle to join Liverpool by accusing the club of failing to deliver on its promises in a lengthy Instagram statement on Tuesday.
Newcastle responded quickly, expressing disappointment with the Swedish international's message while leaving the door open for the 25-year-old to return and join the team's training sessions.
Newcastle's statement read: "We are disappointed to have been alerted to a social media post from Alexander Isak on Tuesday evening. We can clearly state that Alexander remains under contract with the club, and no one at Newcastle United has ever made a commitment to allow him to leave this summer."
The statement added: "We want to keep our best players, but we also understand that the players have their own wishes, and we listen to their views."
The statement emphasized: "As we have made clear to Alexander and his representatives, we are always obligated to consider the best interests of Newcastle United, the team, and our fans when making any decision. We have been clear that the terms of a sale this summer were not met, and we do not expect those terms to be met."
The statement added: "This is a proud, traditional club, and we strive to maintain a family atmosphere within it. Alexander remains part of our family and will be welcomed back whenever he is ready to rejoin his teammates."
Isaac, who had a rejected offer from Liverpool, did not feature in Newcastle's opening Premier League match last Saturday, which ended in a goalless draw against Aston Villa. He trained alone after refusing to play in some pre-season friendlies.
