Loftus-Cheek in line for England return after lengthy absence

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is set to be included in England’s squad for the September international fixtures, which would end a seven-year wait since his last cap. The AC Milan midfielder is being considered for selection in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia, signalling a potential revival of his international career.

The 29-year-old, who has represented England on 10 occasions, last featured in November 2018 when he came off the bench in a friendly win over the United States.

National team coach Thomas Tuchel, familiar with Loftus-Cheek from their time together at Chelsea, appears ready to give the midfielder another opportunity at international level.

The decision comes amid concerns over Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, who is undergoing assessment after suffering a groin problem during his side’s 3-0 victory against Aston Villa.

England will play Andorra at Wembley on Saturday, 6 September, before heading to Belgrade three days later to face Serbia in what could prove a pivotal qualifier.
