Hibs and 10-Man Dundee United Share Thrilling Draw at Easter Road

Hibernian and Dundee United played out a breathless Scottish Premiership clash that had everything except a winner, ending 3-3 after 97 frantic minutes in Leith.

Despite the excitement, neither dugout left satisfied. United boss Jim Goodwin insisted his side had dropped points:

“It was a brilliant game, but I felt we should have won. All three of our goals were really well constructed.”

Hibs head coach David Gray was equally frustrated, especially by his side’s defending:

“We can’t concede the type of goals we did. The character to fight back from 3-1 down was excellent, but it feels like we’re chasing too often.”

The home crowd, gathered to mark Hibs’ 150th anniversary, were stunned early when Luca Stephenson arrived at the back post to give United the lead.

Hibs drew level in bizarre fashion when visiting keeper Yevhen Kucherenkomisjudged a corner and punched the ball into his own net.

United responded before half-time through Zac Sapsford, who tapped in after Ivan Dolcek rounded Hibs goalkeeper Jordan Smith. Stephenson’s second goal after the restart stretched United’s lead to 3-1.

Gray’s triple substitution reignited Hibs, with Kieron Bowie pulling one back with a composed finish.

The game swung again when VAR penalised Vicko Sevelj for handball, earning him a red card and handing Hibs a late penalty. Jamie McGrath converted coolly to complete a remarkable comeback.

Both sides had chances in the 12 minutes of stoppage time, but the frantic pace and lack of composure left the spoils shared.

Analysis

The contest was defined by defensive lapses and erratic goalkeeping.

Kucherenko’s own goal and Smith’s misjudgment for United’s second summed up a chaotic match.

Yet both keepers also produced crucial saves to keep their teams alive.

United will rue throwing away a two-goal cushion, while Hibs will wonder how they conceded so cheaply at home.

In Bowie and Sapsford, both sides had forwards in form, and creative sparks like Dolcek, Boyle, Cadden, and Stephensonall had their moments.

It was a contest full of energy, mistakes, and drama — a perfect advert for the Premiership, but with neither team truly satisfied.
