Barcelona have confirmed that midfielder Gavi will be sidelined for four to five months after undergoing surgery to repair a meniscus injury in his right knee.
The 21-year-old Spain international sustained the injury during a training session in August, shortly after appearing in Barcelona’s first two matches of the new LaLiga season. It marks another setback for Gavi, who previously suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in November 2023, an injury that kept him out for much of last season.
“Gavi has undergone arthroscopic surgery to treat a medial meniscus injury, which was sutured to preserve the meniscus. The estimated recovery time is around four to five months,” the club announced in a statement on Tuesday evening.
The extended absence of one of their most dynamic midfielders represents a significant blow to Barcelona, who are currently second in LaLiga, five points behind leaders Real Madrid but with a game in hand. Xavi’s side will next be in action on Thursday when they travel to face Real Oviedo.
Gavi’s latest injury raises concerns about his long-term fitness and Barcelona’s midfield depth as they look to remain competitive in both domestic and European competitions.
