Harry Kane: More Than Just a Number 9

Harry Kane: More Than Just a Number 9

25 September 2025

Even Jonathan Tah was at a loss for words after the recent Bundesliga match against Hoffenheim. The Bayern Munich defender said, "I'm speechless," when asked about Harry Kane's hat-trick. The only words he found were praise: "He's doing fantastically well. I haven't seen many strikers who do everything he does on the pitch."

Forwards like Kane are often judged by numbers, which are the clearest and perhaps most reliable measure of a striker's performance. But some players aren't satisfied with that. These goal scorers don't just wait for balls in the penalty area, nor are they defined solely by their finishing skills; they offer real added value in attack.

They combine the classic number 9 role with the playmaking abilities of a playmaker. They are dangerous in front of goal, team-oriented, and tactically versatile.

Half the Story

His goal tally so far demonstrates how numbers can be both truthful and deceptive. He's scored eight goals in his first four Bundesliga games, a number that already seems impressive. But even more impressive is that Kane only needed 330 minutes to reach that number, a feat only Serhou Guirassy (Stuttgart 2023/24) and Peter Meier (Borussia Mönchengladbach 1967/68) have achieved. All of the 32-year-old's efforts have come from inside the penalty area. Does this mean Kane embodies the classic striker waiting for the ball in the box? Absolutely not. He's much more than that.

When it comes to game intelligence, few strikers can match him. Unlike a striker who focuses on finishing, the England captain often drops into midfield, drawing opponents in and creating space for his teammates. This is where his technical quality shines through: he delivers precise crosses to the flanks, and even without the ball, Kane moves intelligently between the lines, drawing defenders out of position, recognizing situations early, and always making himself available at the right moment. In this way, he not only participates in building attacks but also creates opportunities for his teammates.

A Different Role

His movement map shows that the majority of his touches are in the attacking zone between midfield and the edge of the opponent's penalty area. He particularly likes to appear on the inside left, remaining constantly present throughout the 90 minutes, rarely dropping back.

It's no wonder the rest of the players benefit. He has registered three assists in his first three Bundesliga games, and when it comes to returning to support, he exerts more effort than most strikers, helping the defense on set pieces and not avoiding tackles.

Chasing the Best

However, the real magic happens in front of the opposing team's goal. Kane's performance there is a combination of precision, timing, and instinct. His hat-trick against Hoffenheim took his tally to 98 goals for Bayern in 103 appearances across all competitions, and Kane once again demonstrated he is one of the best penalty takers in the world.

Even Hoffenheim striker Vesnik Asllani had to admire Harry Kane's sheer quality. He said, "Today we saw once again the sheer quality Harry Kane possesses. In a period when Bayern weren't at their best, he gets one ball and puts it in the net. That shows what kind of world-class striker he is."

Kane remained humble as ever. "It's great to score again and help the team," he said after the final whistle.

No ego, always focused on the team. At the same time, he is closing in on more records: Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Haaland needed 105 games to reach 100 goals for one club. With his latest hat-trick, Kane now has 70 Bundesliga goals to his name, in just 67 appearances.

Kane's successful start to the season shows that he's continuing the momentum of his first two years with Bayern, finishing as the league's top scorer with 36 and 26 goals, respectively.

"I feel good," he said. "I know I'll get opportunities in this team, and that's down to my teammates."

His tremendous efficiency is also impressive: 72.7% of his shots have found the net, while he averages a goal every 41 minutes.

Thanks to Kane, Bayern have scored 18 goals in their first four league matches, a new record. With 12 points and a goal difference of plus 15, the German champions have set new records at the start of their season.
