Estevao’s Last-Minute Strike Sinks Liverpool

Chelsea teenager Estevao Willian struck in the dying seconds to hand his side a dramatic 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, condemning the reigning champions to a third straight defeat.

The Brazilian’s late intervention sparked jubilant celebrations from the home fans, though it also saw head coach Enzo Maresca dismissed in the aftermath.

For Chelsea, the win was merited; for Liverpool, it was yet another bitter setback in a stuttering campaign.

Moises Caicedo gave the Blues the perfect start after 14 minutes, driving a fierce shot from 20 yards beyond stand-in goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who was deputising for the injured Alisson.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot, under pressure after defeats to Crystal Palace and Galatasaray, left £116m summer signing Florian Wirtz on the bench, though he introduced the German at half-time to spark some life into his side.

The visitors did draw level just after the hour mark, Cody Gakpo reacting sharply in the box to turn home after Alexander Isak diverted a Dominik Szoboszlai cross into his path.

Chelsea had chances to restore their lead, with Mamardashvili denying both Estevao and Jamie Gittens late on, while Enzo Fernandez somehow headed against the outside of the post from close range deep into stoppage time.

But just when it seemed the points would be shared, Marc Cucurella’s cross found Estevao, who nipped in front of Andrew Robertson to steer home his first Chelsea goal.

The result leaves Arsenal top of the table, one point clear of Liverpool, after their earlier win over West Ham.

Chelsea Analysis: Estevao Arrives on the Big Stage

Eighteen-year-old Estevao Willian announced himself in spectacular fashion with a stoppage-time winner against the champions.

Already capped by Brazil under Carlo Ancelotti and viewed as one of his nation’s next great attacking talents, the £51m signing from Palmeiras lived up to the hype when it mattered most.

His goal came at the end of a cameo that also featured fellow youngsters Marc Guiu and Jamie Gittens, underlining Maresca’s faith in Chelsea’s new generation.

While Estevao stole the headlines, Caicedo once again underlined his importance.

His thunderous opener set Chelsea on their way, and he nearly struck again late on before showing his defensive quality by tracking Robertson’s injury-time run.

A shadow over the win, however, was the loss of centre-backs Josh Acheampong and Benoît Badiashile to injury, adding to an already lengthy defensive casualty list.

Liverpool Analysis: Another Late Blow for Slot’s Side

Arne Slot reverted to a more familiar midfield, with Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Szoboszlai starting, but the champions still looked far removed from last season’s dominant side.

Mohamed Salah returned to the XI but continued his poor form, wasting a one-on-one with Robert Sánchez and dragging other efforts wide.

Isak, involved in the build-up to Gakpo’s equaliser, still looked short of fitness following his turbulent transfer from Newcastle.

For the second straight league game, Liverpool were undone at the death – a bitter irony for a team once famed for late winners.

After a bruising week that included Champions League disappointment and consecutive league defeats, Slot may welcome the international break as a chance to reset and rebuild confidence.
