Fujino’s Late Strike Seals Comeback as Man City Beat Liverpool

Aoba Fujino scored a dramatic late winner as Manchester City came from behind to defeat Liverpool, handing the hosts a club-record seventh consecutive Women’s Super League loss.

Fujino drilled home a low finish in the closing minutes to lift Andrée Jeglertz’s team to second place in the table, extending Liverpool’s winless league streak that began at the end of last season.

Despite City dominating the first half and pinning Liverpool deep in their own half, the home side struck first on 52 minutes when Cornelia Kapocs headed in a superb Ceri Holland cross.

City equalised 12 minutes later after goalkeeper Rafaela Borggrafe could only parry Khadija Shaw’s header into the path of Iman Beney, who lashed the rebound into the net.

Jeglertz’s side had been sharp but wasteful before the break, with Vivianne Miedema, Kerstin Casparij, and Fujino all denied by Borggrafe.

Liverpool, meanwhile, showed more intent after the restart—Mia Enderby’s deflected cross clipped the post moments before Kapocs gave them the lead.

City’s frustration grew, particularly after Miedema was substituted on the hour, but Beney’s strike restored parity.

And when the match seemed destined for a draw, Fujino struck again, driving a low effort past Borggrafe to secure a deserved win.

Liverpool nearly snatched a point deep in stoppage time when Gemma Bonner pounced on a spilled free-kick, but the flag went up for offside.

The defeat leaves Liverpool second from bottom, still winless after five games this season, while City sit second with 15 points.

Analysis: Liverpool Show Fight, But Struggles Continue

Liverpool’s late offside call denied them a crucial point, and while their second-half display showed heart, their lack of cutting edge remains a major issue.

Kapocs’ header was only their second league goal in five matches, and Holland’s stoppage-time free-kick was just their second shot on target all evening.

Mia Enderby remains one appearance away from equalling the WSL record for most games without a goal by a forward (37).

To make matters worse, Marie-Therese Hobinger suffered a suspected serious knee injury.

Analysis: City Display New Resilience Under Jeglertz

This wasn’t Manchester City’s most fluid attacking performance, but it showcased their newfound resilience under Andrée Jeglertz.

While their defensive structure still needs refining, City displayed the mental toughness to turn a frustrating night into victory — a quality that has often been missing in past seasons.

Jeglertz’s more direct, transition-focused approach may still be taking shape, but his team’s determination to fight back proved decisive at Anfield.
