Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has admitted it was a “relief” that William Osula remained at the club after a proposed deadline-day move to Eintracht Frankfurt collapsed, praising the young forward’s evolution into what he now describes as the “complete package.”
The 22-year-old came close to sealing a late transfer to Germany last month, but the deal fell through — a twist that has since benefited Newcastle. Osula has made notable contributions across the Premier League, Carabao Cup, and Champions League, and played a decisive role in Bruno Guimaraes’ stoppage-time winner against Fulham on Saturday.
Although record signing Nick Woltemade remains Newcastle’s first-choice striker, Osula’s form has been timely, particularly following Yoane Wissa’s knee injury sustained while on international duty with DR Congo.
Reflecting on the transfer saga, Howe explained:
“The next step was for Will to play regularly, so that was the idea behind the Frankfurt move, especially after we brought in two strikers. Obviously, it didn’t happen — and much to our relief it didn’t, because Yoane’s injury meant Will became vitally important.”
Howe praised Osula’s attitude, pace, and growing tactical intelligence, noting his progress both on and off the pitch:
“He’s got speed, athleticism, and now a much better understanding of game management. Through his consistent training attitude, he’s developed into someone who looks like the complete package.”
Osula came off the bench in the 86th minute against Fulham, his powerful effort forcing a save from Bernd Leno before Guimaraes converted the rebound for the match-winner.
Despite dealing with an ankle injury that has limited his finishing drills, Osula’s determination remains evident. Howe highlighted the forward’s growing maturity and professionalism:
“The Will I know has a great personality and zest for life — he’s always joking, popular in the dressing room, and close with his teammates. What’s changed this year is his focus. When it’s time to work, he switches on completely. He’s become very serious about his development and his game, and that’s been a really positive shift.”
