Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has called on his teammates to remain calm and build from a strong defensive foundation after what he described as the side’s best display of the season — a hard-fought 1-0 Champions League victory over Real Madrid on Tuesday night.
The win followed a 2-0 triumph over Aston Villa at the weekend, marking a crucial turnaround for a team that had previously endured six defeats in seven matches and gone ten games without a clean sheet. Against a high-scoring Real Madrid side, Liverpool’s defence showed renewed solidity, limiting Carlo Ancelotti’s team to minimal chances, while Thibaut Courtois spared the Spanish giants from a heavier defeat.
Reflecting on the result, Van Dijk stressed the importance of composure and perspective amid fluctuating form:
“It’s easy to say now because we’ve won twice in a row,” said the Dutch defender. “But in a world of chaos, you have to stay calm and keep perspective. Football can change overnight.”
Liverpool currently trail Premier League leaders Arsenal by seven points, with the Gunners enjoying a near-flawless campaign marked by eight consecutive clean sheets and four straight Champions League victories. Van Dijk acknowledged Arsenal’s form as an example for Liverpool to follow.
“You can see Arsenal are flying, and it’s built on clean sheets and limiting chances,” he added. “We have the quality to hurt any team on the counter, but it all starts with defending. You saw the hard work today — we must keep that up. Sunday will be another big challenge.”
That challenge comes in the form of Manchester City and Erling Haaland, who has already scored 26 goals for club and country this season.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot attributed his side’s resurgence in part to a return to Anfield, noting that home support has been instrumental in restoring belief.
“It helps when you play in front of these fans — it brings the best out of the players and the crowd,” Slot said. “It was a great performance against a team that had only lost once all season. It could have been more.”
Of Liverpool’s six defeats this season, only two have come at home — one of them in the League Cup, when Slot fielded a heavily rotated side against Crystal Palace.
The match also saw the return of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who received a mixed reception when coming on as a late substitute for Real Madrid. Once a local hero at Anfield with seven major trophies to his name, the full-back’s move to Spain remains a sensitive subject among Liverpool supporters.
Meanwhile, Conor Bradley, who has faced scrutiny as Alexander-Arnold’s successor at right-back, delivered a commanding performance. The Northern Irishman effectively neutralised Vinicius Junior, while Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté contained Kylian Mbappé, ensuring neither forward made an impact.
Slot was quick to praise his young defender’s maturity under pressure:
“Before the game, I said they had 26 goals in LaLiga, and Mbappé and Vinicius had 24 goal contributions between them,” he explained. “If you want to win, you must make sure they don’t score. Conor was outstanding — facing Vinicius one-on-one that often isn’t easy for anyone, but he handled it superbly.”
Liverpool’s back-to-back wins and renewed defensive resolve suggest a side rediscovering its rhythm — but with Manchester City up next, maintaining that composure will be the ultimate test of Van Dijk’s call for calm.
