Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed they are providing full support to Destiny Udogie and his family following reports that the 22-year-old Italian international was allegedly threatened with a firearm in London earlier this season.
The incident occurred in early September, with the Metropolitan Police later arresting a 31-year-old man in connection with the case. The suspect has since been released on bail pending further investigation.
A Tottenham spokesperson said on Tuesday:
“We have been providing support for Destiny and his family since the incident and will continue to do so. Given this is a legal matter, we cannot comment any further.”
According to police reports, officers were called late on September 6 after receiving reports that a man in his 20s had been threatened with a gun in a north London suburb — an area known to be home to several Tottenham and Arsenal players.
During the investigation, police learned of a second alleged victim, also a man in his 20s, who reported being blackmailed and threatened by the same individual. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either case.
A police spokesperson added:
“A 31-year-old man was arrested on Monday, September 8, on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, blackmail, and driving without a licence.”
Despite the off-field turmoil, Udogie showed professionalism and composure on the pitch, starting in Tottenham’s 4-0 Champions League victory over FC Copenhagen on Tuesday night.
The left-back, who has become an integral part of Ange Postecoglou’s system, continues to receive the club’s backing as investigations progress, with Spurs prioritising his and his family’s wellbeing above all else.
