Bayern Munich’s perfect start to the season came to an end as Harry Kane struck deep into stoppage time to rescue a 2-2 draw against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga.
Before Saturday’s clash, Bayern had won 16 consecutive matches in all competitions, the best start to a season ever by any men’s team from Europe’s top five leagues.
But despite their late equaliser, Thomas Tuchel’s side missed the chance to match the club’s record for most wins to open a Bundesliga campaign.
Bayern were stunned midway through the first half when Danilho Doekhi’s scrappy effort from a corner squirmed under Manuel Neuer, marking the first time this season the German champions had trailed or conceded before halftime.
Their response, however, was immediate - and spectacular.
Diaz, who has now scored three goals in two games, pulled Bayern level with a moment of brilliance.
After chasing down a Josip Stanisic through ball that seemed destined to go out of play, he kept it alive with a deft touch, spun past his marker, and fired a fierce shot inside the near post from a razor-sharp angle.
Bayern’s dominance resumed, but disaster struck again when Kane, enduring a quiet afternoon by his standards, accidentally flicked a Union free-kick into the path of Doekhi, who grabbed his second to restore the visitors’ lead.
Just as defeat seemed certain, the England captain came to Bayern’s rescue.
In the 93rd minute, Kane rose to meet Tom Bischof’s pinpoint cross, heading home for his 13th Bundesliga goal of the season and ensuring Bayern’s unbeaten run stayed intact - even as their perfect record slipped away.
