Mbappé and Olise Lead Ruthless France to 2026 World Cup Qualification

France sealed their place at the 2026 World Cup with a commanding 4-0 victory over Ukraine, a result driven by standout performances from Kylian Mbappé and Michael Olise. The reigning two-time world champions now hold an unassailable lead atop Group D, confirming their qualification with a match to spare.

Mbappé struck twice, while Olise and Hugo Ekitike added goals of their own, ensuring a dominant display at the Parc des Princes and reinforcing France’s status as one of Europe’s most reliable qualifiers.

The match began with a solemn moment, as the 41,000 spectators observed a minute’s silence to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the November 2015 Paris attacks. The Stade de France—targeted during a friendly fixture the night of the tragedy—served as a poignant reminder of the lives lost and the resilience of French sport. Current head coach Didier Deschamps, who led the team on that night in 2015, is set to step down after the 2026 World Cup, adding further significance to this qualifying campaign.

On the pitch, France demonstrated the attacking precision that has characterised their recent era. Mbappé opened the scoring from the penalty spot early in the second half after Olise was brought down in the box. Olise, increasingly influential after moving into a central role, doubled the lead minutes later with a well-taken finish following sustained pressure.

Ukraine’s defensive structure unravelled late on, allowing Mbappé to tap in his second—and his 55th international goal—moving him within two of Olivier Giroud’s all-time France scoring record. Ekitike, who had earlier struck the post, finally registered his first senior international goal to complete the rout.

Despite a relatively modest qualifying campaign that included a rare draw against Iceland, France remain undefeated and extend their remarkable streak of reaching every World Cup since 1994. They head to their final qualifier in Azerbaijan already assured of top spot, six points clear of both Ukraine and Iceland.

While France can now turn their attention to the World Cup draw in Washington, D.C., on 5 December, Ukraine and Iceland will meet in a decisive showdown on Sunday to determine who progresses to next March’s playoffs.

For France, it was an evening of both reflection and resurgence—one that underscored their pedigree, honoured their past, and reaffirmed their ambitions for 2026.
