Lauren Hemp marked her first start since September with a goal as Women’s Super League leaders Manchester City swept aside rivals Manchester United at the Etihad.
City were in complete control throughout, racing into a 3–0 lead before the break while United failed to register a single shot on target in the first half.
Rebecca Knaak headed in the opener from a Hemp-delivered corner, Khadija Shaw slid home a second from a fizzing Kerstin Casparij cross, and Hemp capped a dominant display by smashing in City’s third just before half-time.
The 25-year-old, returning from an ankle injury sustained on 19 September, looked sharp and confident - a welcome sign for England coach Sarina Wiegman ahead of upcoming friendlies against China and Ghana.
The win moves City four points clear at the top, though Chelsea could reduce the gap when they face Liverpool on Sunday.
“It’s great to be top, but the season is long,” said manager Andrée Jeglertz.
“It gives us confidence, but we need to keep this level right through to May.”
United, coming off an impressive Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain in midweek, looked flat and now sit seven points adrift.
With Wolfsburg next in Europe, Marc Skinner’s side will need a big response.
City have flourished under Jeglertz, and with Hemp back in the starting XI after her brief return against Everton, the league leaders looked every bit the title favourites.
The early stages saw Vivianne Miedema link cleverly with Shaw, while Laura Blindkilde Brown bossed midfield against former City player Jess Park, who returned to the Etihad in United colours.
Casparij was electric on the right flank, setting up Shaw’s goal with a pinpoint delivery before providing the assist for Hemp’s fierce, top-corner strike.
Knaak’s opener - a smart header back across goal - rewarded City’s fast start and early dominance.
With a three-goal cushion at the break, City eased off in the second half, conserving energy as they prepare for what they hope will be a title-winning campaign.
After years of watching Chelsea lift the trophy, City look ready to mount their strongest challenge yet.
After beating PSG in their Champions League opener, United arrived at the derby confident but clearly fatigued.
With just two days between fixtures and four changes to the starting lineup, Skinner’s side struggled to match City’s pace and intensity.
“We won’t use it as an excuse,” Skinner said.
“But managing a squad across multiple competitions is new territory. We need reinforcements in January to support the players.”
From the first minute, United were under pressure.
Jayde Riviere endured a tough 45 minutes up against the revitalised Hemp, while Hinata Miyazawa tried to orchestrate things in midfield with limited success.
United failed to muster a shot on target before the whistle, a worrying sign given how frequently they were pinned inside their own half.
Park came closest after the break, clipping the outside of the post, but City always looked the more likely to score again, with Shaw threatening twice late on.
Back-to-back league defeats have dented United’s early-season momentum, and the upcoming international break may arrive at just the right time for them to reset.
