Wales edged to an unconvincing win in Vaduz, doing just enough to keep their hopes of finishing second in their World Cup qualifying group alive.
Despite facing a Liechtenstein side ranked 206th in the world and made up largely of part-timers, Wales struggled badly for rhythm.
Nathan Broadhead had a first-half goal ruled out for offside after a lengthy VAR review, while goalkeeper Benjamin Büchel—accustomed to facing heavy workloads—was again called upon repeatedly.
Wales dominated possession but showed little creativity, growing more frustrated when Daniel James struck the post early in the second half.
The breakthrough finally arrived on the hour mark: Neco Williams slipped in Daniel James, whose low delivery was turned in at close range by Jordan James.
The goal at least offered relief to the 3,000 travelling Welsh supporters, who had filled almost the entire stadium but were left with little else to celebrate on a largely forgettable night.
Wales now must beat North Macedonia in Cardiff on Tuesday to secure second place behind Belgium and earn a home playoff semi-final in March.
Even without a victory, their Nations League ranking guarantees them a playoff spot—though they would face a one-leg semi-final away from home.
Craig Bellamy’s side will also be without captain Ethan Ampadu and goalscorer Jordan James for that decisive match, with both players suspended after being booked in Vaduz.
Craig Bellamy watched from the stands due to a touchline ban earned for dissent against Belgium, leaving assistant coach Piet Cremers to take charge.
Even so, Wales were widely expected to dispatch a Liechtenstein side that had failed to score in their previous six qualifiers and had shipped 23 goals.
Liechtenstein had shown stubborn resistance in Cardiff earlier in the campaign, holding out until the 40th minute before eventually losing 3–0.
This time, they proved just as disciplined, frustrating Wales for long spells.
Broadhead briefly thought he had put Wales ahead on 25 minutes after pouncing on a failed clearance, but VAR advised referee Juxhin Xhaja to overturn the goal for offside interference on Büchel.
The Liechtenstein keeper had already denied Broadhead and Jordan James, yet Wales’ lacklustre play meant the hosts rarely looked flustered.
After the break, although Wales improved marginally, chances remained scarce.
The decisive moment came from Wales’ most fluent move of the night:
Williams’ perfectly weighted pass released Daniel James, who squared for Jordan James to score his first senior international goal.
Any joy was short-lived, however, as he was booked moments later-ruling him out of the crucial final qualifier alongside Ampadu.
Liechtenstein even threatened to snatch a dramatic equaliser in added time, but Sandro Wolfinger’s volley flew wide, sparing Wales a major embarrassment.
