Germany Thrash Slovakia to Seal 2026 World Cup Qualification

Germany booked their place at the 2026 World Cup in emphatic fashion, overpowering Slovakia 6–0 in Leipzig on Monday. Leroy Sané netted twice, while Nick Woltemade continued his remarkable scoring run as the hosts delivered their most convincing performance of the qualifying campaign.

The victory ensured Germany finished top of Group A, securing direct qualification for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Slovakia, who ended the group in second place, will now advance to the play-offs.

Germany Hit Their Stride After Inconsistent Campaign

Having struggled to impose themselves on lesser-ranked opposition throughout qualifying, Germany produced a dominant display and led 4–0 by half-time. Woltemade opened the scoring to extend his streak to four goals in his last three games, before Serge Gnabry doubled the advantage.

Florian Wirtz — under scrutiny due to mixed form at Liverpool — sparked to life late in the first half, providing two superb assists for Sané in the space of five minutes to put Julian Nagelsmann’s side firmly in control.

Second-Half Comfort as Baku and Ouedraogo Seal Rout

In the second period, Ridle Baku made an immediate impact after replacing captain Joshua Kimmich, rifling in Germany’s fifth from a Gnabry cutback. The night ended on a high for debutant Assan Ouedraogo, who came off the bench to score in front of his home crowd in Leipzig.

Germany’s fifth consecutive win not only secured their World Cup berth but also guaranteed a favourable seeding in next year’s tournament draw — significantly reducing the risk of a group-stage clash with another major contender.

A Strong Finish Masks Earlier Inconsistencies

Despite the commanding result, Germany’s overall qualifying campaign has been solid rather than spectacular. Efficiency has often trumped creativity, and they entered the match knowing that a defeat would open the door for Slovakia to dethrone them at the top of the group.

Slovakia, who stunned Germany with a 2–0 win in the reverse fixture — their first competitive victory over the four-time world champions — offered brief resistance when Michal Ďuriš forced a strong save from goalkeeper Oliver Baumann. But Germany’s attacking fluency quickly extinguished any hopes of an upset.

Nagelsmann Boosted Ahead of Return of Key Players

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann will take encouragement from the performance, particularly given the absence of several key starters. The imminent returns of Kai Havertz, Jamal Musiala, Antonio Rüdiger and Marc-André ter Stegen are expected to further strengthen the squad as preparations for 2026 intensify.

With momentum building at precisely the right time, Germany now look set to approach next year’s World Cup in far better form than their early qualifying struggles suggested.
