Bayern’s ‘Messi-style’ teen Lennart Karl emerges as Germany’s next big star

Bayern Munich have lifted almost every trophy imaginable over the past decade — but what they’ve lacked is a homegrown superstar. That wait may finally be over.

Seventeen-year-old Lennart Karl has exploded onto the scene with a string of record-breaking performances, delivering the kind of excitement Bayern fans haven’t felt since Thomas Müller broke through in 2008.

Karl stunned Europe with two goals in three days last month — first against Club Brugge, then Borussia Mönchengladbach — becoming Bayern’s youngest ever Champions League scorer and the third-youngest scorer in Bundesliga history. On Wednesday, he struck again, netting Bayern’s equaliser in a 3-1 Champions League defeat to Arsenal as hero Martin Ødegaard watched from the opposing bench.

In doing so, Karl became the youngest player ever to score in his first two Champions League starts, surpassing Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri. Less than a year removed from U19 football, he’s already being tipped as a potential 2026 World Cup wildcard.

“This kid has something special”

Bayern reporter Taufig Khalil remembers hearing Karl’s name when his son came home after facing the winger in a youth match.

“Papa, it’s unbelievable. This guy scored five goals,” he recalled.

Karl’s youth numbers were staggering: 34 goals and 11 assists in 31 games last season for Bayern and Germany’s U17 sides. His rise accelerated when he made his senior debut in a 10-0 Club World Cup win, before signing his first professional contract amid interest from Real Madrid and Ajax.

But his stardom traces further back. A viral U11 goal for Eintracht Frankfurt — a backheel control and volley into the top corner — earned him the club’s goal of the year award and personal recognition from their president and sporting director.

Bayern pounced in 2022, signing him at 14. Eintracht remain frustrated to this day.

A fearless winger with Messi-like traits

At just 5'6", Karl is lightning quick, direct and unpredictable — traits that have fueled comparisons to Lionel Messi and Arjen Robben.

“He plays the Messi style,” says Khalil. “Low centre of gravity, fast cuts, fast turns — like an NFL running back.”

Defenders know he wants to cut inside onto his left foot. Like Robben, they still can’t stop him.

German football journalist Mark Lovell adds:

“He plays with freedom and confidence — refreshing at a club where pressure is immense.”

Level-headed, hungry, and still going to school

Despite the hype, Karl’s maturity stands out. He trains relentlessly, listens to senior players, and focuses on improving — even showing up for school the morning after scoring on his Champions League debut.

“For someone his age, he doesn’t look out of place at all,” Lovell said.

“You don’t have to get the boy on track,” added Bayern sporting director Max Eberl. “He knows what he can do.”

Germany call-up? Not yet, says Nagelsmann

Calls for Karl to join the senior national team are growing, but Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann insists it’s too soon.

Karl instead joined the U21s in November — and scored three times in two games. He then added another Bundesliga goal and produced a standout Champions League display against Arsenal days later.

The next German superstar?

The warnings about overhyping young talent always loom, but those around Karl believe he has the mentality to handle it.

“As long as his head stays clear and he trusts his abilities… he knows what he can do,” Khalil said.

With Michael Ballack as his agent, and leaders like Harry Kane and Manuel Neuer guiding him, the pathway is set.

Karl is the homegrown star Bayern have been craving — and Germany may have just found their next generational talent.
