Arsenal Finish Gruelling Week With Draw

Arsenal emerged from a demanding seven-day spell with two impressive victories and a hard-earned draw, yet there was a lingering sense they could have taken even more from the week.

After dominant wins over Tottenham and Bayern Munich, a trip to Chelsea on limited recovery time always threatened to be a different kind of test.

Preparations were further complicated when William Saliba was ruled out after picking up a late training injury, leaving Arsenal to improvise at the back.

Considering the circumstances, a 1–1 draw at Stamford Bridge, secured by Mikel Merino’s second-half header, keeps Arsenal five points clear at the top of the Premier League and represents a respectable result.

But with Chelsea reduced to 10 men for most of the match following Moisés Caicedo’s dismissal, manager Mikel Arteta admitted his side let a big opportunity slip.

“It’s been a huge week - starting with the derby, then Bayern only three days later - and we’ve lost players throughout,” Arteta said.

“Today we had to use a defensive partnership that hadn’t played together before."

"The captain still isn’t back, the striker isn’t back, Kai is out, and we lost Leo in midweek."

"The team had to adapt.”

Martin Ødegaard and Viktor Gyökeres were fit enough to make substitute appearances, but not to start.

“Given the difficulty of the week, it’s been overwhelmingly positive,” Arteta added.

“But it feels like we should have won today."

"That’s something to reflect on.”

Arsenal Face Weeks Without Saliba and Gabriel

The Chelsea match marked just the second Premier League game since August 2021 in which neither Gabriel Magalhães nor Saliba featured.

Their absence was felt not only in open play but also in set pieces, where Arsenal are usually a major threat.

With both centre-backs unavailable, Arsenal’s corners, free-kicks and long throws lacked their usual force.

To make matters worse, Chelsea’s opener - Trevoh Chalobah’s header - came from a corner Arsenal typically defend well.

“That one really hurt,” Arteta said of Saliba’s late withdrawal.

“It happened yesterday and left us having to rethink everything.”

Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié formed an entirely new central-defensive pairing - Arteta confirmed it was their first time starting together in the league.

“The positive is the players’ attitude,” he added.

“They’re willing to learn, connect, and build new relationships."

"Today was a huge learning experience and gives us confidence that whoever comes in will perform.”

Arteta also revealed that Gabriel’s recovery remains ongoing, saying the Brazilian’s return is still “weeks” away.
