Everton manager David Moyes has pushed back against criticism of Jack Grealish, insisting the winger has made a meaningful impact despite external scrutiny. Grealish netted his second goal of the season on Tuesday, securing a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth and easing pressure surrounding his recent performances.
Grealish made an encouraging start following his August loan move from Manchester City, but his form had dipped in recent weeks. The 30-year-old — who struggled for game time under Pep Guardiola last season — managed just one goal in his first 14 appearances for Everton before delivering the decisive moment at the Vitality Stadium.
The match winner came in the 78th minute, when Grealish’s deflected effort found the net. Moyes later joked that the goal could have been credited as an own goal by Bournemouth defender Bafode Diakite, but emphasised its importance and the value Grealish brings beyond scoring.
“Jack is getting consistent minutes and that’s been huge for him,” Moyes said. “He’s contributing with assists and goals, and although there have been matches where he could have offered a bit more, he continues to give us something extra. The supporters appreciate the way he carries himself, and I want him to keep pushing — the assists are good, but I’m asking for more goals. He’s an important player for us and helping drive our improvement.”
Grealish arrived at Everton as a Premier League and Champions League winner from his successful stint at Manchester City, which followed his high-profile transfer from Aston Villa in 2021. However, injuries and reports of off-field distractions hindered his ability to maintain that level.
Despite those challenges, Grealish says he is relishing his time at Everton — particularly the relationship he has formed with Moyes.
“I’ve got two goals this season — one from a tackle and one from a deflection — but after getting criticised for not scoring enough, I’m taking both,” Grealish said. “It feels good to be contributing. This is a brilliant team.
“I love the manager to pieces. I’ve only known him a few months, but I can’t speak highly enough of him — both as a person and for how he makes me feel. He gives me the desire to play for him, and all credit goes to him.”
