A mural of Barcelona's rising star, Lamine Yamal, wearing the number 10 jersey, has sparked controversy among residents of the Torreta neighborhood. While some see it as an artistic tribute to the rising star, others consider it provocative and a blight on the local landscape.
The mural was vandalized this morning, adding another chapter to its already contentious history.
For the children of the neighborhood, the mural was a source of genuine joy. Players from the La Torreta club received Barcelona jerseys bearing Jamal's name, and some even received tickets to the team's match against Olympiacos at Camp Nou. Representatives of the local association stated, "When the club arrived, every child received a Barcelona jersey, and the children were delighted… even those who support Real Madrid."
In an attempt to find a compromise, the city council conducted a poll among residents. The results showed that 69.6% voted in favor of removing the mural from its current location without relocating it within the city limits.
Mayor Marta Pujol confirmed that authorities had contacted the relevant organization to remove the mural as quickly as possible without harming the football club.
The mural was originally scheduled to be removed during the Festa de la Croix festival in May, which would have allowed ample time to fulfill the contract and maintain the neighborhood without any financial impact.
However, the controversy unexpectedly escalated, especially since the mural did not affect the daily life of the neighborhood, while other, more pressing local issues, such as poor street paving, inadequate lighting, and polluted streams, did not elicit the same level of reaction.
