Liverpool part ways with set-piece coach Briggs

Liverpool have parted company with set-piece coach Aaron Briggs following ongoing difficulties defending dead-ball situations this season.

The decision comes after Arne Slot’s side conceded their 12th set-piece goal of the campaign during Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Wolves, a statistic that has increasingly drawn attention within the club’s performance review.

Briggs joined Liverpool in September, having initially been appointed to Slot’s backroom staff at the start of the 2024–25 season. His departure has been described as a mutual decision, with the club reassessing its approach to set-piece preparation amid mounting concerns over effectiveness in this area.

Responsibility for both attacking and defensive set-piece organisation will now be absorbed by the remainder of Liverpool’s coaching staff, as the club looks to stabilise a facet of the game that has become increasingly influential across the Premier League.

With set-piece efficiency now a decisive factor for many teams, Liverpool’s struggles in this department have represented a notable vulnerability. Against that backdrop, the decision to make a change reflects a broader effort to address marginal gains and defensive consistency as the season progresses.
