Salah and Mané Renew Rivalry with AFCON Final at Stake

Three years after last sharing the same stage, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané will once again be central figures on Wednesday night—this time as opponents—when Egypt and Senegal meet in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals, with a place in the final on the line. The clash in Tangiers represents more than a tactical contest; it is a symbolic reunion of two of Africa’s defining footballers of the modern era.

The encounter marks the first time the former Liverpool teammates have faced each other since the 2022 UEFA Champions League final, when Real Madrid defeated the Reds in Paris. That match effectively closed a chapter in their club partnership. Mané soon departed Anfield for Bayern Munich, before later moving to Al-Nassr, while Salah remained at Liverpool, where his future has been the subject of persistent speculation—particularly regarding a potential move to Saudi Arabia.

Despite reports of tension with new head coach Arne Slot earlier this season, Salah has arrived at AFCON in inspired form. The Egypt captain has scored four goals in four matches, driving the Pharaohs into the semi-finals and keeping alive his pursuit of the one major honour that has eluded him at international level.

At 33, with his 34th birthday approaching in June, time is becoming a significant factor for Salah. Egypt’s record seven-time AFCON winners, he has twice experienced final heartbreak—first in 2017 against Cameroon and again in 2022, when Senegal prevailed on penalties in Yaoundé. On that night, Salah watched helplessly as Mané converted the decisive spot-kick, moments after seeing his own chance to take a penalty disappear.

History repeated itself less than two months later in World Cup qualifying. Once again, Egypt and Senegal were separated only by penalties; once again, Mané scored and Salah missed. Senegal advanced to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, while Egypt were left to watch from home. Both nations have since qualified for the 2026 tournament in North America, which may represent the final World Cup stage for both players.

Pressure and Perspective

For now, however, the focus remains firmly on continental supremacy. Senegal are aiming to reach a third AFCON final in four editions, while Egypt seek to move one step closer to a record-extending eighth title.

The contrast in psychological burden between the two stars is striking. Mané, who turns 34 later this year, carries less weight, having already lifted the AFCON trophy. Salah, by contrast, has been candid about the importance of the competition to him personally.

“Nobody, even in Egypt, wants to win this trophy more than me,” Salah said after Egypt’s quarter-final victory over Ivory Coast. “I have won almost every prize. This is the title I am waiting for.”

Their rivalry is underscored by a shared history at Liverpool, where they spent five seasons together under Jürgen Klopp. Alongside Roberto Firmino, they formed one of the most feared attacking trios in world football, winning the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020. Yet, beneath the success, there were moments of friction.

Mané has since acknowledged that their on-field relationship was not always seamless, admitting that frustrations occasionally surfaced over decision-making in the final third. While the comments were delivered with humour, they hinted at a competitive edge that now defines their international rivalry.

This time, there are no shared objectives—only opposing ambitions. Mané, who has scored once in this tournament, has spoken openly about how lifting the AFCON in 2022 eased the psychological pressure on his game. Salah, still chasing that breakthrough moment, understands the burden all too well.

On Wednesday, two former African Footballers of the Year will stand on opposite sides once more, each representing not just his country, but contrasting legacies—one seeking to reaffirm continental dominance, the other chasing redemption.
