Carrick faces Manchester derby test as Frank and Nuno battle for survival

Michael Carrick begins his short-term tenure as Manchester United manager with an immediate and unforgiving challenge, as his side host local rivals Manchester City in Saturday’s Premier League derby at Old Trafford.

The stakes are high at both ends of the table. City have the opportunity to close the gap on leaders Arsenal to three points, while United require a positive result to reignite their push for Champions League qualification after a turbulent spell.

Elsewhere, managerial futures are under intense scrutiny in north London, where Tottenham boss Thomas Frank and West Ham head coach Nuno Espirito Santo go head-to-head in a derby that could have significant consequences for both clubs.

Carrick embraces immediate test

Carrick’s appointment brings a sense of reset at Old Trafford, but the 42-year-old is afforded little time to ease into the role, with the league’s top two awaiting United in his opening fixtures.

“It’s what we live for — big games,” Carrick said. “Some are more challenging than others, but it’s why we’re here. We’ll go at it head on.”

Saturday’s derby comes ahead of a daunting trip to Arsenal next weekend, giving Carrick an early opportunity to stabilise a campaign that has threatened to unravel. United’s FA Cup exit to Brighton last weekend followed a run of just one win in six league matches either side of Ruben Amorim’s dismissal.

Despite their inconsistency, United remain firmly in contention for a top-four finish, sitting just three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool.

Carrick is no stranger to the demands of the role, having gone unbeaten during a three-match interim spell following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure in 2021. Since then, he has gained further managerial experience at Middlesbrough, although his spell there ended in June after failing to secure promotion.

“I understand the job and the responsibility that comes with it,” Carrick added. “I feel in a strong place to move forward and, hopefully, be successful here.”

Pressure mounting on Frank and Nuno

The London derby between Tottenham and West Ham arrives with both managers under mounting pressure, despite each surviving recent speculation over their futures.

Tottenham have managed just four wins in their last 17 matches across all competitions, slipping to 14th in the Premier League and exiting both domestic cups. Frank now finds himself at risk of joining a list of managers who have struggled to succeed in north London — a list that includes Nuno, whose own Spurs tenure lasted just 17 games in 2021.

Nuno, meanwhile, is already fighting for redemption after being dismissed earlier this season by Nottingham Forest. Since taking charge of West Ham in September, the Portuguese coach has overseen just two wins in 16 league matches.

The Hammers sit 18th, seven points adrift of safety, and are in urgent need of a turnaround if they are to avoid a prolonged relegation battle.

Arsenal seek to overcome Forest hurdle

Arsenal arrive at the City Ground in formidable form, leading both the Premier League and Champions League and remaining on course for a remarkable quadruple after securing FA Cup and League Cup victories this week.

However, Mikel Arteta’s side face a historically difficult assignment in Nottingham, having won just once in their last five visits to Forest.

The hosts will be eager to respond after a damaging FA Cup exit to League Two side Wrexham on penalties, a result that prompted an angry reaction from manager Sean Dyche.

“It’s unacceptable to me, and it’s unacceptable to the badge,” Dyche said, referencing a first-half performance that left his side trailing 2-0 before fighting back to draw 3-3.
