Bournemouth have completed the signing of Hungary international midfielder Alex Toth from Ferencváros in a deal worth £10.4 million.
The 20-year-old has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with the Cherries. The agreement also includes up to £2.6m in performance-related add-ons and a 10% sell-on clause in favour of the Hungarian champions.
Bournemouth moved decisively to beat competition from Benfica, Galatasaray and Lazio, all of whom had been monitoring Toth, who already has nine senior caps for Hungary.
“When I knew AFC Bournemouth were interested, I was excited straight away,” Toth said. “This is a strong club in the Premier League, the best and most competitive league in the world. The structure of the club and the ambition really impressed me.”
Toth has spent his entire club career in Hungary, progressing through the ranks before a loan spell at Soroksár during the 2023-24 season. He made his Ferencváros debut in December 2024 and has since accumulated 52 appearances, scoring four goals, while also gaining valuable experience in European competition.
Bournemouth’s head of football operations Tiago Pinto highlighted the midfielder’s pedigree and development curve: “He comes from a club accustomed to competing at the highest level domestically and in Europe. We’re excited about what Alex can offer and how he can continue to grow under Andoni Iraola’s coaching.”
Toth becomes Bournemouth’s third signing of the January transfer window, following the arrivals of Fraser Forster and Ade Solanke.
Toth is a versatile midfielder capable of operating across multiple roles. While he has experience as a box-to-box number eight, he has also played as a holding midfielder and in a more advanced number 10 role. Rather than a traditional ball-winning “destroyer,” his strengths lie in ball progression, positional intelligence and creativity from deeper areas.
Crucially, he has performed these roles not only at club level but also for the Hungary national team, including appearances against elite international opposition. His exposure to Europa League football suggests he is better prepared for the step up to the Premier League than a typical domestic-league import.
Those who have worked with Toth consistently point to his professionalism and mentality. Unlike Hungary’s headline talents who broke through at a very young age, Toth has progressed steadily, earning his opportunities through discipline, patience and work ethic.
His development at Ferencváros was shaped by learning from experienced teammates such as Naby Keïta, while working under Robbie Keane, a period widely viewed as pivotal in refining his tactical understanding and intensity.
Toth’s energy, pressing ability and tactical flexibility align well with Andoni Iraola’s high-intensity system, which prioritises aggressive pressing and quick reactions after losing possession, particularly in the final third.
Given Bournemouth’s current setup, his most immediate impact may come in a more advanced midfield role, where his pressing, off-ball movement and technical quality can support Iraola’s proactive style. Over time, his adaptability suggests he could evolve into a multifunctional midfield option within the squad.
Overall, Bournemouth are investing not just in current ability, but in a high-upside midfielder whose experience, character and tactical fit make him a calculated and forward-looking acquisition.
