Ter Stegen undergoes medical with his new club

20 January 2026

The departure of German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen from Barcelona is now just a matter of time after a near-final agreement with Girona to sign the veteran player.

According to the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, ter Stegen will not travel with the Catalan team to face Slavia Prague on Wednesday evening in the fifth round of the Champions League group stage. He will undergo a medical with Girona in preparation for his loan move until the end of the season.

The Spanish newspaper previously reported that Barcelona had reached a verbal agreement with Girona regarding the German goalkeeper.

It stated that Barcelona will cover 90% of the German goalkeeper's salary, with Girona paying less than one million euros.

Ter Stegen is seeking sufficient playing time to secure his place in the 2026 World Cup squad with the German national team.

Ter Stegen is under contract with Barcelona until the summer of 2028 and has helped the club win the Champions League title, six La Liga titles, and the Club World Cup.

Barcelona's squad also includes goalkeeper Juan García, who joined from Espanyol at the start of the current season, and Wojciech Szczęsny.
