Vinicius revival can help Arbeloa’s Real Madrid lift-off

Real Madrid’s season showed renewed signs of life this week, driven by an outstanding performance from Vinicius Junior, whose resurgence could prove pivotal as Los Blancos travel to Villarreal on Saturday in LaLiga.

Madrid sit second in the table and can move top with victory on the east coast, ahead of leaders Barcelona’s home meeting with Real Oviedo on Sunday. A win would not only apply pressure at the summit but also significantly weaken Villarreal’s own title aspirations.

Marcelino García Toral’s side are third, seven points behind Madrid and eight adrift of champions Barcelona. Defeat at the Estadio de la Cerámica would all but extinguish hopes of a first-ever LaLiga title for the Yellow Submarine.

Tuesday’s emphatic 6-1 Champions League victory over Monaco helped lift the gloom around the Bernabéu and provided new head coach Álvaro Arbeloa with early momentum. It was the clearest indication yet of what his Madrid might become, following a troubled start marked by a Copa del Rey last-16 defeat to Albacete just two days after Xabi Alonso’s departure.

Arbeloa’s second match, a league win over Levante, was overshadowed by a strong show of fan dissent, an atmosphere that weighed heavily on the team. Against Monaco, however, with the crowd fully behind them, Madrid produced their most complete display of the campaign.

Central to that performance was Vinicius. After enduring a 16-match goal drought, the Brazilian has now scored twice in his last four appearances. Beyond his superb solo effort against Monaco, he was a constant threat and directly influenced three further goals.

“I think he’s a player who thrives when he gets love,” said teammate Jude Bellingham. “He grows in confidence and joy, and that shows in his football. The whistles can weigh heavily, but now he looks freer.”

Vinicius echoed that sentiment, acknowledging the importance of fan backing. “We need to keep going with the support of our fans so everything returns to normal,” he said. “If we stay united, we can achieve great things this season.”

The winger’s celebration—running straight to embrace Arbeloa after scoring—underlined the renewed bond between player and coach. Arbeloa has publicly defended Vinicius in recent weeks, insisting the Brazilian needs emotional support to perform at his best.

“I saw the fans chanting his name,” Arbeloa said. “He’s an emotional player who needs affection. When he feels loved, he gives everything.”

Despite finishing runner-up in the 2024 Ballon d’Or, Vinicius has struggled for consistency since. His contract runs until the summer of 2027, and negotiations over an extension have stalled in recent months. However, the mood appears to be shifting.

“Renewal talks are gathering pace,” reported Spanish newspaper AS. “Despite a difficult period, Vinicius knows the club stands firmly behind him. The support from teammates and Arbeloa has been decisive.”

From the outset of his tenure, Arbeloa has stressed that a confident, content Vinicius is central to Madrid’s success. Both player and club will be eager to ensure that renewed optimism carries over into Saturday’s crucial test in Villarreal.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Frenkie de Jong

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong will be tasked with dictating play in the absence of Pedri, who is sidelined for the next month. Against an Oviedo side with just two wins from their first 20 matches, De Jong’s control could be decisive.
