Juventus strike decisive blow to Napoli title defence as Milan lose ground on Inter

Juventus delivered a significant setback to Napoli’s Serie A title defence on Sunday with a commanding 3-0 victory in Turin, a result that leaves the reigning champions nine points adrift of leaders Inter Milan, who continue to establish clear separation at the summit.

Goals from Jonathan David, Kenan Yildiz and Filip Kostic sealed a statement win for a rejuvenated Juventus side under Luciano Spalletti, lifting them into the Champions League places and underlining their resurgence during the second half of the campaign.

Despite the emphatic scoreline, Juventus remain one point behind Napoli and Roma, who climbed into third place after holding second-placed AC Milan to a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Olimpico.

Yildiz, who capped an influential performance with Juventus’ second goal, praised the team’s cohesion and confidence.

“We played really well and enjoyed ourselves,” he told DAZN. “We had fun on the pitch and with our fans — hopefully we can keep building on this.”

For Napoli, the defeat compounds a difficult period. Now fourth, Antonio Conte’s side must also contend with pressure from below, with Como just three points behind after dismantling Torino 6-0 on Saturday.

Attention now turns to Wednesday’s decisive Champions League fixture against Chelsea, a match that could define Napoli’s season. Conte has been hampered by persistent injury problems, and while the performance in Turin was competitive for long spells, it again lacked cutting edge.

The return of Romelu Lukaku, who made his first appearance of the season as a late substitute, was one of the few positives on a frustrating night.

“I can’t criticise the players — they gave everything,” Conte told Sky. “Sometimes you overcome the obstacles, sometimes you don’t. We know the situation with injuries, but you can’t dwell on it. You have to keep going.”

The match hinged on a decisive spell in the second half. Napoli were still in contention when Yildiz doubled Juventus’ lead in the 77th minute, capitalising on a defensive error to calmly convert after Fabio Miretti was gifted possession. Lukaku was preparing to enter the fray moments later, but the goal effectively ended Napoli’s hopes.

Jonathan David had earlier opened the scoring midway through the first half, while Filip Kostic added a third late on with a powerful low finish that arguably overstated Juventus’ dominance, given Napoli’s control in certain phases despite their lack of clear chances.

Roma hold Milan as Inter extend advantage

Napoli were overtaken on goal difference by Roma, whose 1-1 draw with Milan also allowed Inter to extend their lead over their city rivals to five points at the top of the table.

Milan had appeared on course for victory when Koni De Winter headed home Luka Modric’s pinpoint cross in the 62nd minute, scoring his first Serie A goal against the run of play after Roma had dominated the opening half.

Mike Maignan produced another outstanding display in the Milan goal to deny the hosts repeatedly, making De Winter’s opener feel particularly cruel for Roma.

However, Lorenzo Pellegrini restored parity from the penalty spot after Davide Bartesaghi was penalised for handball, earning Roma their first draw of the season and moving them into the top three.

Roma head coach Gian Piero Gasperini was encouraged by the performance.

“Had we scored first, we would have had a very good chance to win,” he said. “The league table shows Milan are the second-best team in Italy, and we come out of this stronger than before. Conceding so little against a side of that quality takes organisation and hard work.”

Elsewhere, former Napoli forward Giacomo Raspadori marked his full debut for Atalanta with a goal as the Bergamo side cruised to a 4-0 win over Parma, responding emphatically to their midweek defeat by Athletic Bilbao. Gianluca Scamacca, Marten de Roon and Nikola Krstovic were also on target for Raffaele Palladino’s side, who face high-flying Como next weekend.

Bologna, meanwhile, slipped further behind the European places after surrendering a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 at Genoa. The comeback victory moved Genoa six points clear of the relegation zone and left Bologna 10 points adrift of Como in the Europa Conference League position.
