Fenerbahçe have confirmed the signing of France midfielder N’Golo Kanté from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad, bringing a swift resolution to a transfer that appeared to have collapsed less than 24 hours earlier.
The move had been thrown into doubt on Tuesday when Fenerbahçe issued a public statement attributing the breakdown of negotiations to Al-Ittihad, claiming the Saudi club had failed to submit the required documentation to finalise a deal that also involves Morocco striker Youssef En-Nesyri moving in the opposite direction.
However, the Turkish club announced on Wednesday that the outstanding issues had been resolved, allowing Kanté to complete his switch to Istanbul after two-and-a-half years in Saudi Arabia.
Now 34, Kanté joined Al-Ittihad from Chelsea in 2023, closing a highly decorated spell in English football during which he won the Champions League, Premier League, Europa League and FA Cup. Renowned for his consistency, tactical intelligence and relentless work rate, Kanté remains one of the most respected midfielders of his generation despite his advancing years.
His arrival represents a significant statement of intent from Fenerbahçe, who are seeking to add experience and control to their midfield as they compete domestically and in Europe.
En-Nesyri’s departure fills a growing vacancy at Al-Ittihad, following the exit of former Real Madrid and France striker Karim Benzema, who joined Saudi Pro League rivals Al-Hilal earlier this week. The Moroccan forward, 28, is expected to play a key role in reshaping Al-Ittihad’s attack as the club enters a new phase of its project.
For Fenerbahçe, the successful completion of the deal brings closure to a turbulent negotiation — and secures a player whose pedigree could prove pivotal in the decisive stages of the season.
