De Zerbi Departs Marseille by Mutual Consent After Difficult Run

Roberto de Zerbi has parted company with Marseille by mutual consent, bringing an abrupt end to a tenure that began with promise but concluded amid mounting pressure.

The Italian’s exit follows a heavy 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain and a damaging Champions League elimination after a 3-0 loss at Club Brugge — results that intensified scrutiny around the club’s trajectory in the decisive phase of the season.

De Zerbi arrived in the summer of 2024 after leaving Brighton, where he had built a reputation for progressive, possession-based football. His first campaign in France delivered tangible progress, guiding Marseille to a second-place finish in Ligue 1. However, this season has proved more turbulent. The club currently sit fourth in the table, 12 points adrift of leaders PSG, and their European ambitions have been curtailed earlier than anticipated.

In a statement, Marseille confirmed the decision was collective.

“Olympique de Marseille and Roberto De Zerbi, coach of the first team, have announced the end of their collaboration by mutual agreement,” the club said.

“Following discussions between all stakeholders in the club's management — the owner, president, director of football, and coach — it was decided to make a change at the helm of the first team.

“This was a difficult collective decision, taken after careful consideration in the best interests of the club, in order to respond to the sporting challenges of the end of the season.”

The phrasing reflects a strategic recalibration rather than an abrupt dismissal. While De Zerbi’s footballing philosophy brought stylistic identity and periods of strong domestic form, recent defensive frailties and inconsistency in high-stakes fixtures undermined momentum.

Marseille now face a critical juncture. With the season entering its closing stages and Champions League qualification still attainable, the club’s hierarchy has opted for immediate change in an attempt to stabilise performances and reassert competitive clarity.

For De Zerbi, the departure marks another transitional moment in a managerial career defined by bold tactical ideas and high expectations. Whether this move represents a temporary setback or the prelude to another high-profile opportunity will depend on how his next chapter unfolds.
