Spain Striker Aghehowa Faces World Cup Doubt After Serious Knee Injury

Samu Aghehowa’s prospects of representing Spain at this summer’s World Cup have been dealt a significant setback after the Porto forward sustained a serious knee injury that is expected to sideline him for several months.

The 21-year-old suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during Porto’s 1-1 draw with Sporting Lisbon on Monday. The diagnosis effectively rules him out for the remainder of the domestic season and casts major doubt over his availability for the World Cup, which begins in North America on 11 June.

Aghehowa had featured twice during Spain’s qualification campaign and was viewed as a developing option within the national team’s attacking rotation. However, the typical recovery timeline for ACL injuries makes a return in time for tournament selection highly unlikely.

“I’ll be out of action for a few months,” Aghehowa wrote on social media. “It hurts me not being able to help the team as I’d like, fighting on the field. Now I’m just another fan supporting us towards our goals.”

The injury interrupts what had been a strong upward trajectory. Since joining Porto from Atletico Madrid in August 2024, Aghehowa has established himself as one of the most productive young forwards in Portuguese football, scoring 32 goals in 50 league appearances. His blend of physicality, direct running and finishing had positioned him as both a key figure for Porto and a potential impact option for Spain on the international stage.

For Spain’s coaching staff, the setback narrows their attacking depth ahead of the tournament. For Aghehowa, it represents a pivotal rehabilitation period at a formative stage of his career. The focus now shifts from selection hopes to recovery management, with the priority being a full and uncompromised return rather than an accelerated comeback.

While his World Cup ambitions appear severely compromised, the longer-term outlook remains intact — provided his recovery proceeds without complication.
