Mansfield Shock Burnley with Second-Half Fightback to Make FA Cup History

Mansfield Town produced a memorable upset as they came from behind to beat Burnley and reach the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time since 1975.

The League One side trailed at the break after Josh Laurent’s composed finish gave the Premier League strugglers a deserved lead midway through the first half.

But second-half goals from Rhys Oates and captain Louis Reed turned the tie on its head and sent the home supporters into raptures.

Burnley could have been ahead inside the opening minutes when veteran striker Ashley Barnes slid in to meet Quilindschy Hartman’s cross, only to somehow steer the ball wide from close range.

Their missed chances would come back to haunt them.

Laurent eventually broke the deadlock after 20 minutes, showing superb composure to dummy a shot, send goalkeeper Liam Roberts the wrong way and roll into an empty net.

Burnley continued to threaten, with Jacob Bruun Larsen denied his first goal for the club by a superb Kyle Knoyle clearance off the line after delicately lifting the ball over Roberts.

Mansfield thought they had equalised just before half-time when Oates finished clinically, but the goal was ruled out for a foul in the build-up.

Undeterred, the hosts started the second half on the front foot and created immediate chances.

Oates wasted a golden one-on-one after a defensive slip, blazing over the bar, but made amends moments later by powering home a header from Knoyle’s cross to level the tie.

Burnley briefly regained control, yet it was Mansfield who delivered the decisive moment.

With 10 minutes remaining, Reed stepped up and curled a sublime free-kick from 25 yards beyond Max Weiss to complete the turnaround.

There was still time for more drama as Zian Flemming blazed over from close range in stoppage time, but Mansfield held firm to seal one of the shocks of the round.

Analysis: Heavy rotation proves costly for Burnley

Burnley boss Scott Parker made nine changes following his side’s midweek league comeback at Crystal Palace, and the gamble backfired.

Despite racking up an expected goals figure of 3.82 - their highest of the season - the Clarets could only find the net once.

Rustiness showed as Barnes, Bruun Larsen and Loum Tchaouna all spurned clear opportunities to put the tie to bed.

With no further cup distractions and survival in the Premier League looking increasingly unlikely, this painful defeat quickly erases the feel-good factor from midweek.

For Mansfield, though, it was a night to remember - and a piece of club history rewritten.
