Bayern Munich strengthened their grip on the Bundesliga title race as Harry Kane scored twice to reach a remarkable 500 career goals in a commanding win away to Werder Bremen.
The England captain opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute, calmly converting after VAR ruled that Werder midfielder Senne Lynen had fouled teenager Lennart Karl inside the area.
It was Kane’s ninth successful penalty of the season.
Just three minutes later, the 32-year-old struck again, curling a precise effort from the edge of the box in off the post to double Bayern’s advantage and bring up a historic milestone - his 500th senior goal for club and country, achieved in 743 appearances.
A century of those strikes have come from the spot.
Kane has now amassed 41 goals in all competitions this season, including 26 in the league, as Bayern moved six points clear of rivals Borussia Dortmund, who beat Mainz on Friday.
The only concern for Vincent Kompany’s side came at the interval when goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was forced off with a calf issue, Jonas Urbig stepping in for the second half.
Any lingering nerves were settled on 70 minutes when Leon Goretzka controlled on the edge of the box and fired a low finish into the corner to make it 3-0.
Bayern now turn their attention to Saturday’s clash with Eintracht Frankfurt, where victory could see them stretch their lead even further.
Werder, meanwhile, remain in the relegation play-off spot and face a crucial encounter with St Pauli as they battle to preserve their top-flight status.
