Leeds Edge Birmingham on Penalties to Reach FA Cup Fifth Round

Leeds United squeezed into the fifth round of the FA Cup after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Birmingham City.

Goalkeeper Lucas Perri proved the hero in the shootout, saving from Tommy Doyle before Patrick Roberts blazed over.

Sean Longstaff then calmly converted Leeds’ fourth successful spot-kick to seal progression for Daniel Farke’s side.

Birmingham, managed by Chris Davies, had forced penalties thanks to Roberts’ stunning 89th-minute equaliser - a fierce left-footed strike that deflected in off James Justin.

The hosts almost snatched victory in stoppage time, but Kanya Fujimoto saw an effort blocked after Ibrahim Osman had struck the post.

Earlier, Birmingham had made a fast start, with Jay Stansfield denied by a superb fingertip save from Perri.

Leeds responded after the break, with Ethan Ampadu introduced at half-time to shift the momentum.

The breakthrough came on 49 minutes when Noah Okafor slipped in Lukas Nmecha, who fired home at the near post.

With no VAR in operation at this stage of the competition, the goal stood despite offside appeals.

Birmingham refused to wilt.

August Priske and Carlos Vicente both threatened before Roberts’ late leveller sent the tie to extra time, where chances at both ends - including efforts from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ampadu - failed to settle it.

In the end, Leeds held their nerve from the spot to reach the last 16 for the third time in four years.

While their primary aim remains Premier League survival, the cup now offers Farke’s side a genuine opportunity for a meaningful run, while Birmingham must refocus on their push for promotion back to the top flight.
