Barca strikers firing blanks as Villarreal visit

FC Barcelona welcome Villarreal CF on Saturday with a slender lead at the top of LaLiga — but growing scrutiny over the output of their central strikers.

Head coach Hansi Flick has alternated between veteran forward Robert Lewandowski and Spain international Ferran Torres as the focal point of his attack. Yet neither has provided sustained authority in the No 9 role during 2026.

Lewandowski, now 37, has shown signs of physical regression alongside intermittent fitness concerns. He has scored five goals in his last 18 appearances across all competitions, but his reduced mobility has limited his involvement in Barcelona’s high-tempo build-up phases.

Torres, 25, is on course for a personal best goal tally, yet that statistic masks inconsistency. Much of his output arrived during a prolific spell late last year. Since then, he has registered just three goals in 15 matches, while questions remain over his link-up play and ball retention when Barça construct attacks through the thirds.

Speaking this week, Lewandowski defended the rotation policy, suggesting workload management rather than decline is a factor.

“With so many matches, rotation at striker is natural,” he told Polish magazine Pilka Nozna. “When you play 90 minutes every three days your whole life is about recovery. Now the balance is a little better. I’m tired but not worn out.”

Goals shared — but not concentrated

Barcelona still lead LaLiga with 67 goals, yet the distribution of scoring underlines the absence of a dominant centre-forward. Ten players have scored at least twice, and no individual has surpassed Torres’ 12 goals.

In contrast, rivals Real Madrid benefit from the clinical presence of Kylian Mbappe, who tops both the LaLiga scoring chart with 23 goals and the Champions League standings with 13 — despite managing a persistent knee issue.

Flick himself acknowledged the benchmark in January: “Mbappé is the best striker in the world. He has scored many, many goals and is a world-class player.”

Structural balance still in question

Barcelona’s attacking concerns exist alongside defensive vulnerabilities. Their aggressive high line continues to be exposed, though last season’s domestic treble was secured by overwhelming opponents offensively. This campaign, the margin for error appears thinner.

Wide players Lamine Yamal and Raphinha remain elite creative outlets, but the lack of consistent central finishing has increased tactical pressure.

England forward Marcus Rashford — on loan from Manchester United — has largely been deployed from the left, contributing 10 goals and 13 assists in 34 appearances. However, with Raphinha back to full fitness, Rashford may view the central role as his clearest route to increased minutes.

Title implications

Barcelona lead LaLiga by a single point entering the weekend. Madrid sit one point behind ahead of their Monday fixture against Getafe CF, intensifying the pressure on Flick’s side to maintain momentum.

Villarreal trail the leaders by 10 points. While their title hopes are fading, a victory at Camp Nou would significantly reshape the race and restore belief.

Flick is hopeful that a recent lighter schedule — while other clubs navigated European play-offs — will provide renewed sharpness.

“It’s important that we have these two weeks to rest but also focus on the next match against Villarreal,” he said. “After that, we return to a match every three or four days. These two weeks are important.”

Player to watch: Pablo Fornals

Pablo Fornals, now 30, is enjoying one of the most productive campaigns of his career with Real Betis. The former West Ham United midfielder scored in Betis’ 2-0 away win over Sevilla FC earlier this season and will again be central as the rivals meet on Sunday.
