FC Barcelona announced the results of medical tests conducted on Jules Koundé and Alejandro Baldé after they sustained injuries in the Copa del Rey semi-final second leg against Atlético Madrid. Barcelona were eliminated from the Copa del Rey at the semi-final stage, despite defeating Atlético Madrid 3-0 in the second leg match played on Tuesday at the Camp Nou.
The victory was not enough for the Catalan team to overcome their 4-0 first-leg deficit, allowing Atlético Madrid to advance 4-3 on aggregate and secure their place in the final.
Barcelona's loss to Atlético was not limited to the sporting and psychological aspects, but also included a significant blow to their squad, with two key defenders suffering injuries. Koundé left the field in the 12th minute after feeling pain in his left thigh, and Baldé, who came on as a substitute for Koundé, was also forced off in the second half with a similar injury.
Barcelona released two official statements via their X platform to clarify the nature of the injuries. Regarding Koundé, they stated: "Medical tests have revealed a hamstring injury in his left thigh. The length of his absence will depend on his response to treatment and the progress of his recovery." Concerning Balde's injury, the Catalan club said: "Medical reports indicate that the player also has a hamstring injury in his left thigh. The expected recovery period is approximately four weeks."
While Balde is confirmed to miss both legs of the Champions League round of 16 tie against Newcastle United, as well as three La Liga matches against Athletic Bilbao, Rayo Vallecano, and Sevilla, Koundé's return to the pitch will depend on his response to treatment.
