Millwall fined for offensive chanting during League Cup clash with Crystal Palace

Millwall have been fined £45,000 ($60,448) following incidents of offensive chanting by supporters during their League Cup fixture against Crystal Palace in September, the Football Association (FA) confirmed on Monday.

The Championship club admitted the charge after a section of supporters directed chants of “South London Spastics” toward Palace fans during the match. The phrase is widely recognised as a discriminatory slur targeting people with disabilities, prompting disciplinary action from the FA.

In response to the ruling, Millwall strongly condemned the behaviour and reiterated the club’s stance against discrimination.

“This chant goes against everything the club stands for and is wholeheartedly condemned,” the club said in an official statement.

Millwall also emphasised that any individuals found responsible for discriminatory conduct would face sanctions from the club.

“The club has a zero-tolerance policy towards all forms of discriminatory abuse; such behaviour has no place in society. Any individual identified as engaging in such abuse will be banned.”

The sanction marks Millwall’s third breach of FA regulations in the past three years, highlighting ongoing concerns around supporter conduct. As a result, the FA has decided to extend an existing action plan imposed on the club, which will now remain in place until the conclusion of the 2026–27 season.

The club acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and warned that future violations could lead to harsher consequences.

“Any future financial penalties would be much more significant, and further action could be taken against the club and our fans which would punish the majority,” the statement added.

Despite the off-field issue, Millwall continue to perform strongly on the pitch and currently sit third in the Championship standings. They are scheduled to face Derby County on Tuesday as they look to maintain their push for promotion.
