Philadelphia Union endured another difficult night at home on Tuesday, falling 1–0 to Mexico’s Club América in the first leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup second-round tie.
The defeat marked a third consecutive loss on home soil for Bradley Carnell’s side and leaves them facing a challenging second leg in Mexico City next week. South African centre-back Olwethu Makhanya returned to the starting line-up after serving a one-match suspension, but Union were unable to capitalise on home advantage.
The Concacaf Champions Cup is the premier club competition for teams across North America, Central America and the Caribbean, comparable to Europe’s UEFA Champions League. This year’s champions will also secure qualification for the expanded 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.
Philadelphia entered the contest under pressure after losing their opening two home fixtures of the new Major League Soccer season, and their struggles continued as Club América took control midway through the first half.
The decisive moment arrived in the 20th minute following a fluid team move from the visitors. A sequence of quick, incisive passes opened up the Union defence before Brian Rodríguez burst forward, splitting two defenders as he drove toward the edge of the penalty area.
Rodríguez then squared the ball to Raphael Veiga, who showed composure to control with his first touch before unleashing a powerful 14-yard half-volley into the top-left corner.
Despite pushing for an equaliser, Union were unable to break down a disciplined América defence, leaving Carnell’s team with significant work to do in the return leg.
The winner of the tie will advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face either Nashville SC or Inter Miami.
