Chelsea Women successfully defended their FA Women's League Cup title with a 2–0 victory over Manchester United Women, extending their dominant record over their rivals in major finals.
England international Lauren James gave Chelsea the lead after capitalising on a defensive mistake by Dominique Janssen.
The forward calmly finished before celebrating by cupping her ear toward the Manchester United supporters - fans of her former club.
Chelsea controlled much of the first half but United still threatened at times.
Elisabeth Terland struck the crossbar while Ellen Wangerheim missed a big chance at the near post.
The victory was secured when Aggie Beever-Jones scored Chelsea’s second goal, sealing the trophy in front of a record crowd of 21,619 at Ashton Gate Stadium.
The win provides a boost for Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor, whose side have faced criticism during the season after falling behind Manchester City Women in the Women's Super League title race.
It also marks Bompastor’s fourth trophy since joining the club last year after leading Chelsea to an unbeaten domestic treble last season.
However, the afternoon was not entirely positive for Chelsea.
Defender Nathalie Bjorn, who had just returned from a three-month injury absence, was forced off only five minutes after coming on as a substitute.
The Swedish defender left the pitch in tears as she was comforted by Bompastor and United’s Gabby George.
Despite a challenging season, Chelsea once again demonstrated their ability to deliver in big matches.
United manager Marc Skinner had warned before the game that champions often find a way to win, even when under pressure - and Chelsea did exactly that.
The Blues dominated early possession and looked confident in attack, with James producing an impressive performance and midfielder Erin Cuthbert leading the team with the captain’s armband in a cup final for the first time.
Chelsea also had to cope with missing key players, including Ellie Carpenter and Naomi Girma, but teenage defender Veerle Buurman impressed with a composed display.
Speaking after the match, James praised the team’s mentality.
“It’s an amazing afternoon."
"It’s great to start the rest of the season with another trophy,” she said.
“It’s in our DNA - we always find a way to win."
"Whether we play well or not, we fight and make ourselves hard to beat.”
For Manchester United, the defeat continues a painful pattern against Chelsea in major finals.
United have now lost three cup finals to the London side, including two defeats in the Women's FA Cup.
Although United improved as the match progressed and created several chances - Terland hitting the bar and Wangerheim missing from close range - they were unable to capitalise on their opportunities.
Captain Maya Le Tissier also produced a crucial block to deny Alyssa Thompson earlier in the game, but defensive errors ultimately proved costly.
United’s only major trophy remains their FA Cup triumph over Tottenham Hotspur Women in 2024.
Skinner admitted his team must learn to handle key moments better.
“We rush in the big moments and that’s the difference in these games,” he said.
“Chelsea’s record is incredible in this competition, but we need to stop just getting close to them and start matching them.”
