Hope for Man City, Chelsea & Spurs – Champions League Comebacks Offer Inspiration

A difficult set of first-leg results has left several Premier League clubs facing uphill battles in the UEFA Champions League round of 16, but history suggests dramatic turnarounds remain possible.

Of the six English sides involved, none secured a first-leg victory. Newcastle United and Arsenal earned draws against Barcelona and Bayer Leverkusen respectively, while Liverpool suffered a narrow defeat to Galatasaray. However, the most significant challenges lie ahead for Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchester City, all of whom trail by three-goal margins.

Tottenham must overturn their deficit against Atletico Madrid, Chelsea face a daunting task against Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester City take on Real Madrid in what promises to be a decisive set of second-leg fixtures.

While the odds are steep, precedent offers encouragement. Across Champions League history, there have been 51 instances of teams trailing by three or more goals after the first leg of a knockout tie, with four successfully completing a comeback. These rare turnarounds underline both the difficulty and the possibility of such feats.

One of the most memorable examples came in 2019, when Tottenham Hotspur produced a stunning semi-final comeback against Ajax. Trailing 3-0 on aggregate at half-time in the second leg, a remarkable hat-trick from Lucas Moura secured progression on away goals in dramatic fashion.

Just a day earlier, Liverpool had delivered an equally iconic performance, overturning a 3-0 first-leg deficit to defeat Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield. Goals from Divock Origi and a brace from Georginio Wijnaldum, alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold’s quick-thinking assist, sealed one of the competition’s greatest nights.

AS Roma also staged a famous comeback in 2018, eliminating Barcelona on away goals after a 3-0 second-leg victory, with key contributions from Edin Dzeko, Daniele De Rossi and Kostas Manolas.

Perhaps the most iconic turnaround remains “La Remontada” in 2017, when Barcelona overturned a 4-0 first-leg defeat to beat Paris Saint-Germain 6-1. Inspired by Neymar and a last-gasp winner from Sergi Roberto, Barcelona became the first team to recover from a four-goal deficit in the competition.

Going further back, Deportivo La Coruna stunned AC Milan in 2004, overturning a 4-1 first-leg loss with a 4-0 victory in Spain to progress on aggregate.

These historic examples reinforce the belief that, while unlikely, comebacks of this magnitude are achievable. For clubs like Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, the challenge is immense—but not unprecedented.
