Lens oppose proposed rescheduling of PSG title clash

RC Lens have formally objected to any attempt to reschedule their key Ligue 1 fixture against Paris Saint-Germain, raising concerns over sporting fairness and consistency.

The two sides are due to meet on April 11 in a potentially decisive clash at the top of the table. However, the date has come under pressure after PSG’s emphatic win over Chelsea secured a Champions League quarter-final tie with Liverpool. Those matches are scheduled for April 8 and 14, either side of the Lens encounter.

PSG, the reigning European champions, have already been granted one domestic postponement this season — against FC Nantes — due to fixture congestion. A source within the club confirmed on Monday that a formal request has now been submitted to reschedule the Lens match.

Lens, who sit one point behind PSG, with their opponents holding a game in hand, responded firmly amid increasing public discussion. In an official statement, the club reiterated that it had opposed any change from the initial stages of communication.

“Racing Club de Lens made it clear to Paris Saint-Germain from the very first enquiries that it did not wish to see this date changed,” the statement read.

The club also stressed its commitment to maintaining competitive integrity, highlighting the importance of “fairness, clear rules, and respect for all involved” in French football.

Head coach Pierre Sage echoed that stance after Lens’ 5-1 win over Angers SCO, pointing out that his side had previously managed tight schedules without requesting adjustments.

“We played a French Cup match on a Thursday and then again on Sunday against FC Metz,” he said.

While acknowledging that additional rest can improve performance, Sage added that PSG are accustomed to competing across multiple competitions and are capable of handling such demands.
