Viktor Gyokeres produced a standout performance with a clinical hat-trick to lead Sweden national football team to a 3-1 victory over Ukraine national football team, securing their place in the World Cup play-off final.
The Arsenal forward opened the scoring in just the sixth minute with a close-range finish in Valencia. He doubled Sweden’s advantage early in the second half with a composed strike before completing his treble from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute, after winning the foul himself.
Ukraine managed a late response through Matvii Ponomarenko, who headed home a consolation goal, but Sweden remained firmly in control throughout. The performance highlighted the growing impact of head coach Graham Potter, whose side delivered one of their most complete displays in an otherwise inconsistent campaign.
Sweden’s path to this stage has been far from convincing. They managed just two points from six matches in a challenging group that included Switzerland national football team, Kosovo national football team and Slovenia national football team. However, strong performances in the UEFA Nations League granted them another opportunity via the play-offs.
The victory now leaves Sweden one match away from qualifying for only their second FIFA World Cup appearance in the past 20 years.
Sweden will face Poland national football team in Stockholm, after Poland defeated Albania national football team 2-1. The winner will secure a place at the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted across the United States, Mexico and Canada.
For Ukraine, the defeat marks another disappointment in their pursuit of World Cup qualification. Forced to play home fixtures on neutral ground since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the team had hoped to lift national morale by reaching their first World Cup since 2006.
Instead, they suffered another play-off exit, following their previous elimination by Wales national football team, extending their absence from the global stage.
