White deserves another chance with England, says Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel has backed Ben White for a renewed role with England national football team, insisting the defender has earned a second opportunity after returning to the squad for the first time in over three years.

White has been included in England’s squad for upcoming World Cup warm-up fixtures against Uruguay national football team and Japan national football team, marking a significant step in his international reintegration. The Arsenal defender previously left England’s camp during the 2022 FIFA World Cup for personal reasons and subsequently made himself unavailable throughout Gareth Southgate’s tenure, which concluded after UEFA Euro 2024.

Speaking ahead of the Uruguay fixture, Tuchel emphasised a forward-looking approach, stating that every player deserves a second chance and making it clear that he did not dwell on past issues. Instead, his focus has been on building a fresh environment and offering players the opportunity to re-establish themselves within the national setup.

Tuchel revealed that White responded positively when approached about a return, expressing an immediate desire to rejoin the squad. The England manager views this willingness as a key factor in facilitating the defender’s reintegration.

However, Tuchel acknowledged that while public support is expected, internal dynamics will also play a role. He suggested that it will be important for White to reconnect with teammates who were part of the previous World Cup squad, ensuring clarity and cohesion within the group moving forward.

England will host Uruguay at Wembley Stadium before facing Japan at the same venue, as preparations intensify for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to take place across the United States, Mexico and Canada.
