UEFA lobbying FIFA to increase World Cup prize fund

UEFA is under pressure from its member associations to push for an increase in prize money from FIFA ahead of this summer’s FIFA World Cup, amid concerns over financial sustainability for participating nations.

According to reports, several European federations have urged UEFA to formally lobby FIFA for a larger share of tournament revenues, which are projected to exceed $11 billion. While FIFA has committed to reinvesting proceeds into the global game, clarity over distribution to participating teams remains limited.

There is growing concern among some national associations that the cost of competing in the tournament — including travel, accommodation, and logistical expenses — could outweigh financial returns, particularly for smaller federations.

Neither UEFA nor FIFA provided official comment on the matter.

The expanded 48-team World Cup will be jointly hosted across North America, with opening fixtures scheduled to take place in Mexico City on June 11. Matches will then continue in Toronto and Los Angeles the following day.

The final is set to be held at MetLife Stadium on July 19.

The issue of financial distribution is expected to be a key topic at the upcoming FIFA Congress, which will take place in Vancouver at the end of May.

Under current plans, each participating team is set to receive approximately $1.5 million in preparation funding, alongside additional allowances intended to cover expenses such as travel, accommodation, and catering for delegations of around 50 personnel.
